What to Expect

Knoydart is one of the most remote and beautiful areas on the west coast of Scotland. The area is only accessible via boat to Inverie, or via a long walk. As a result it is the realm of hikers and is entirely free from tourism. There are several superb mountain views in Knoydart, notably from Ladhar Bheinn. The main goal of this trip will be to camp high on the mountain on the best weather day we get. The walking here is also beautiful - there are more trees here than in many of the nearby areas.

This will be only my second visit to the area (my first will be one month before, as I write this I have never been) so this is an exciting adventure for me, but I have an enormous amount of experience hiking the mountains to the north, and I am very familiar with the Scottish weather and light. The images on this page (except the banner image) are kindly provided by my friend Guy Richardson. They show the mountains in June, so it gives a sense of how wonderfully green the landscape will be!

ITINERARY

As with most of my trips we will keep the itinerary flexible, but this is a multiday continuous hike and we will start and finish at Kinloch Hourn. The routes, mountains and timings will be weather dependent but we will certainly place Ladhar Bheinn as the top priority of the trip and work the plan around that. My aim is to fit in two or three high camps.

The first night and last night we will most likely camp near Kinloch Hourn (though perhaps up a nearby hill), with 4 nights inbetween to explore Knoydart itself. Since we are doing this hike at midsummer the days are ridiculously long. Sunrise is at 4.30am and sunset is at 10.20pm. There will need to be a bit of resting in the tents during the day. Midges can also be bad at this time of year, its a complete lottery and depends on the hatch times of any given year, and how windy it is.

TUITION

We'll be a small group of just 4 so I will be on hand to provide as much help as I possibly can. I will be planning to record a video on this trip, and take my own images, but I will still prioritise teaching.

FITNESS AND EXPERIENCE

Until I have more experience of the area I am aiming this trip at hikers who are very confident of their fitness. It's possible that on this trip we will go down one mountain and back up another in a single day. This will be hard (I am no athlete myself) but we will take our time. I'd anticipate doing UP TO 55km and UP TO 3000m of ascent and descent, but it may be much less than this if the weather has other plans.

EQUIPMENT

A complete PDF kitlist is provided well in advance so you can be confident you have everything you need. I can rent out high-end lightweight camping equipment perfectly suited for the trip. However most prefer to bring their own kit. Aside from camping equipment, you will need suitable outdoor clothing, walking boots a rucksack and a number of other items.

MEETING AND LEAVING

We will meet at Kinloch Hourn at 6pm on Sunday 22nd of June. I can do pickups from Glasgow if you don't have transport.

We will be back at Kinloch Hourn in the afternoon of Friday 27th June and the workshop ends the following morning, Saturday the 28th when I will drive back to Glasgow early in the morning.

ADDITIONAL EXPENSES

The trip does not include food, drink or personal insurance.

PRICE AND BOOKING

This workshop is priced at £840 total with a £340 deposit required to book your place. The remaining £500 is due 2 months before the workshop starts.
