What to Expect

In this trip we will be hiking to and photographing some of the most remote and spectacular locations in the Southern Icelandic Highlands. This trip is co-lead by myself and Aron Reynisson, a local photographer and experienced mountain guide. We will have access to his modified 4X4 Mercedes Sprinter van throughout the trip to allow us to move between mountain huts, and explore very distict areas of the Highlands. We will also be doing a lot of hiking to get of some of the most amazing locations that Aaron and I have visited on our adventures.

This is a unique workshop offering for those willing to hike for their images, but who perhaps don't enjoy camping (as on my previous trips to Iceland). There are other tours visiting the Highlands with 4X4s but these are based out of hotels closer to the coast, necessitating a lot more driving. The amount of hiking we do on this trip will allow us to visit some locations that photography tours havent been to before, so you will come away with images from locations that are well off the beaten track. This tour may not be a luxury trip, but it will be a truly memorable adventure unlike anything you have done before. We'll show you that Iceland has a lot more to offer than the Diamond Beach and Skogafoss!

Itinerary

The itinerary below is based on our current hut bookings. Our itinerary will remain as flexibly as possible subject to our ability to move bookings according to the best weather in different areas. All the images on this page are from areas we will visit.

Tuition

There will be plenty of 1-to-1 time both on the hill and back at our huts where we can review images and cover post processing.

Fitness and Experience

You should have done a mountain or two in the past and have reasonable overall fitness in order to hike up to 14km in a day with 300m elevation change. More important than fitness is enthusiasm and a sense of adventure. We are likely to be out all day in the cold and wind, but  we will hope to be rewarded with the kind of dramatic scenes only Iceland can provide.

Equipment

Clothing should include baselayers, mid-layers, a down jacket, possibly synthetic insulation for when its a bit wetter, full waterproofs (jacket and trousers), hat, thin gloves, thick gloves and good boots. Walking poles are also a necessity.

Most of the huts have showers and you may want some more comfortable clothes to change into as well as a change of outdoor clothes. You will need a sleeping bag and pillow. You'll need a duffel bag to keep your clothes and possessions in during the trip and a hiking camera bag (I use a hiking specific 40L pack which I put all my camera gear in). We still recommend packing light - this will make it a lot easier to move between huts.

I would recommend keeping camera kit simple – a single camera, a wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens, filters and a tripod. A 24-70 or 24-105 can be particularly useful on challenging days where there may be excellent photographic opportunities but its difficult to change lenses! However if you wish to bring a larger range of gear then you may, this is afterall the benefit of having a large vehicle. You may wish to bring a drone, but be aware that it can be too windy to fly on some days. Please note that you cannot rely on the ability to recharge batteries during the trip.

A full equipment list will be provided prior to the trip.

Transport

We will be travelling in a specialised 4X4 Mercedes Sprinter Van with a trailer for our luggage. This will allow us to drive some of Icelands most challenging highland roads and drive across rivers.

Accomodation

All accomodation is included. On the first and last nights we will be staying in hotels in Reykjavik. The rest of the nights we will be staying in simple mountain huts with sleeping platforms. These huts are remote and expensive to service, consequently they aren't much cheaper than staying in a hotel, but they are of course in exceptional locations for landscape photography and allow us to maximise our time in the mountains.

Meals

We will provide all meals for the trip except when we are staying in hotels. We will iron out the finer details here closer to the time. At the huts there will be a communal breakfast every morning, packed lunches, and a communal dinner. Meal times may be slightly erratic depending on the conditions, we will be doing everything we can to make the most of weather windows!

Payment

This workshop is priced at £3500 with a £1000 deposit. The balance of £2500 is due on June 5th 2026.
