What to Expect

Join myself and Joe Cornish hiking in the magical landscapes of Assynt and Coigach in the autumn. This area is one of the finest landscapes in the UK, beloved by photographers for its mountains, lochans, coastline and birch woodland, all of which make it an ideal prospect for an autumn workshop. We will be staying in comfortable accommodation near Ullapool, but whilst we won’t be camping, this trip will be very much hiking focused. When the weather allows, we will be heading up mountains, Cul Mor, being the primary goal of the trip. We will also hike out to more distant low-level locations that we have visited over the years, and we may visit areas that are entirely new to both of us. In the evenings after dinner in Ullapool we will host image reviews and processing sessions.

Itinerary

The trip will be adapted to suit the weather. The photos (some by Joe, some by me!) are all highly representative of what we might hope to photograph. Ullapool is a 30-45 minute drive from the mountains of Assynt and Coigach. It is the same travel time to An Teallach which we will also plan to photograph. In the mornings we will have breakfast at the house, make a packed lunch and spend the day out in the landscape with dinner out in Ullapool. If the weather is particularly conducive to our plans then we should be able to fit in a couple of mountains and a fair number of day hikes. Whilst the focus will be on visiting harder to reach and lesser known locations, there will be probably be some days where the weather keeps us closer to the vehicles!

Tuition

With a group of just 5 and two leaders there will be plenty of 1-to-1 time both on the hill and back at our accommodation. During the day we will be mostly focussed on our photography, although if the weather is bad we may spend a morning or afternoon indoors running through our images or discussing some finer aspects of landscape photography.

Fitness and Experience

This is not the usual roadside tour of Assynt and Coigach and, although we may visit some locations that are easily accessible, it is important that you are fit enough to walk up a mountain with a backpack. Cul Mor is a 5km walk each way with a 600m ascent and a scramble on a boulder field near the summit. It will take approximately 3 hours to reach the summit. We may also do some longer walks between the mountains, or head up Stac Pollaidh or Sgurr Tuath.

Equipment

A kit list will be sent out in advance of the trip, but you should dress expecting wet and cold weather. It could be near zero and windy on the summits, so full waterproofs, hat, gloves and plenty of warm layers are necessary. You will need a headtorch in case we need to walk back in the dark (as will be the plan if we get a good mountain day). You must have walking boots or other suitable footwear if you are more experienced and know you can get away with trail shoes etc! Wellies and an umbrella may also be helpful.

Meeting and Leaving

We will meet at our house just outside Ullapool at 6pm on Saturday 19th October. I can offer lifts from Inverness around 3pm for anyone not driving. The workshop concludes after breakfast on Friday, however we have the accommodation for one more night and you will be welcome to stay free of charge.

Additional Expenses

The trip does not include food, drink or personal insurance. We will be going out for dinner on any night that we aren't out late. If we are out late then we will eat at the accomodation.

Our Accomodation

We will be staying in a very large self-catered house, set up for 12, on the edge of Loch Broom and 5 minutes drive from Ullapool. There is a large living room, dining room, and fully equipped kitchen. There are 4 double bedrooms, all en-suite and two twin rooms. We have the building from Saturday to Saturday, although the trip ends on Friday you are welcome to stay an additional night.
