What to Expect

The Come hiking in the magical landscapes of Assynt and Coigach in the autumn. This area is one of the finest landscapes in the UK, beloved by photographers for its mountains, lochans, coastline and birch woodland, all of which make it an ideal prospect for an autumn workshop. We will be staying in comfortable accommodation near Ullapool, but whilst we won’t be camping, this trip will still include hikes up nearby mountains into deep corries. We may also visit areas that are entirely new to me. In the evenings after dinner in Ullapool there will be image reviews, processing and printing sessions.

Itinerary

The trip will be adapted to suit the weather. The photos are all highly representative of what we might hope to photograph. We are based 5 minutes drive from Ullapool, and it is a further 30 minute drive to the mountains of Assynt and Coigach. We will also hope to visit viewpoints of An Teallach, a 20-30 minute drive to the south. In the mornings we will have breakfast at the house, make a packed lunch and spend the day out in the landscape. We'll eat dinner back at base, or on some occasions head out to a restaurant in Ullapool. If the weather is particularly conducive to our plans then we should be able to fit in a couple of mountains and a fair number of day hikes. Whilst the focus will be on visiting harder to reach and lesser known locations, there will be probably be some days where the weather keeps us closer to the vehicles!

Tuition

With a group of 6 there will be plenty of 1-to-1 time both on the hill and back at our accommodation. During the day we will be mostly focussed on our photography, although if the weather is bad we may spend a morning or afternoon indoors running through our images, printing or discussing some finer aspects of landscape photography.

Fitness and Experience

This is not the usual roadside tour of Assynt and Coigach and, although we may visit some locations that are easily accessible, it is important that you are fit enough to walk up a mountain with a backpack. Cul Mor (a likely target) is a 5km walk each way with a 600m ascent, though we will be walking around the scramble at the top and heading up grassy slopes. It will take approximately 3 hours to reach the summit. We may also do some longer walks between the mountains, or head up Stac Pollaid,  Sgurr Tuath or even An Teallach.

Equipment

A kit list will be sent out in advance of the trip, but you should dress expecting wet and cold weather. It could be near zero and windy on the summits, so full waterproofs, hat, gloves and plenty of warm layers are necessary. You will need a headtorch in case we need to walk back in the dark (as will be the plan if we get a good mountain day). You must have walking boots or other suitable footwear if you are more experienced and know you can get away with trail shoes etc! Wellies and an umbrella may also be helpful.

Meeting and Leaving

We will meet at our house just outside Ullapool at 6pm on Saturday 17th October. I can offer lifts from Inverness around 3pm for anyone not driving. The workshop concludes after breakfast on Friday, however we have the accommodation for one more night and you will be welcome to stay free of charge. I will need to leave early on Friday, but I can give anyone who wishes a return lift to Inverness.

Additional Expenses

The trip does not include food, drink or personal insurance. We will be going out for dinner from time to time. On most nights we will eat at the accomodation, if you would like to cook a group meal that is totally up to you.

Our Accomodation

We will be staying in a very large self-catered house, set up for 12 (we will be 7 in total), on the edge of Loch Broom and 5 minutes drive from Ullapool. There is a extremely large open-plan kitchen / dining room perfect for printing and image reviews, and attached living room. There are 3 double bedrooms, (ensuite), one King Size room (ensuite) and two twin rooms (shared bathroom). We have the building from Saturday to Saturday, so although the trip ends on Friday you are welcome to stay an additional night.
