Gneiss Flame

The Great Wilderness, Scotland

In the two nights spent camped at Loch Na Bearta with a group, trying to escape the weather, I had plenty of time to explore the surrounds. I was particularly taken by this rather sculptural example of Lewisian Gneiss, a rock type I have often struggled to photograph to my satisfaction. From this angle it takes on a flame like profile and I spent several hours waiting for the right balance of light - partial light on the rock, and patches of sunshine beyond. This image is from my book "The Great Wilderness" and can be found on page 32-33
