Torridon Winter Adventure

30 Jan 2020 - 05 Feb 2020  |  £860

What to Expect

In this winter workshop we will be hiking before sunrise, spending the daylight hours high up in the mountains and then descending in the dark. On rest days or bad weather days we'll be taking easy walks or driving to low level locations. Throughout we will have the assistance of Rich Pyne, a qualified Winter Mountain Leader to teach us crampon and ice-axe use, self arrest and mountain safety in winter conditions. We'll be staying in comfortable self catered accomodation and enjoying a mix of home cooked food and the occasional pub meal. In the evenings we'll cover image processing to get the most out of the shots we capture on the trip.

We'll be based at Torridon Village itself within easy reach of the surrounding mountains. Peaks we might tackle include Beinn A Chearcaill, Beinn Liath Mor, Beinn Sheildaig, Beinn Alligin, Beinn Na Eaglaise and Beinn Damph.

Last year we had a real mix of weather, some bad some good, with some outstanding summit views. All the images shown are from this trip (or the one spare day I had before it started)!

Terms & Conditions

Thursday 30th: Pickup from Inverness in the early afternoon or meet at our accomodation in Torridon in the evening. Meet and greet and plan for the week.

Friday to Tuesday: Hiking! We'll do a mixture of peaks and lower walks depending on the conditions. We'll also practice our winter skills. If its clear at night we can stay out for some astro work. The actual plan will be totally dependent on weather but I have a lot of hiking experience in the area (I have walked up every mountain, some many times) so I'm well placed to come up with the best plan!

Wednesday: Workshop ends after a low level sunrise. I can drop people off in Inverness as required.

I will be on hand at all times to help you with your images. The level of independence and tuition is entirely flexible, depending on individual interests and needs. I often find that I have a higher than normal proportion of competent photographers on my trips (who are looking to stretch their horizons) so if you are a beginner I'm often sharing my time between 2 or 3! However you should familiarise yourself with your camera before the trip.

Mountain safety is of critical importance in the winter which is why we have Rich joining us throughout. As a fully qualified winter mountain leader with a ridiculous amount of experience in UK Winter, he will be able to train us in all aspects surrounding safe travel in winter mountains. This is a really enjoyable part of the trip. Aside from being informative these courses are a lot of fun!

You do not need prior mountain experience however you must be moderately fit. Previously 20-60 year olds have joined me on these winter trips, so age isnt really a factor. We could be doing as much as 900m of altitude change in a day which is hard work even with a day pack so the right attitude is certainly important! If you have any concerns about your fitness then please contact me.

You will require full winter clothing including a winter down jacket, full waterproofs, winter gloves, spare gloves, liner gloves, gaiters and winter B2 boots.  Hiking poles and a headtorch WITH SPARE BATTERIES is also essential. You will also require and ice axe and crampons. If you dont have these and don't want to purchase some we will make them available for rental to the group. I will send a full kit list out in December.

Obviously the goal of this workshop is to get out to photograph full winter conditions. Late January gives us a good chance of capturing the snow, particularly on the tops. However it is possible that there will be no snow at all, and that event we just carry on as normal! Torridon is one of the most majestic mountain landscapes in the UK and there will be no shortage of dramatic scenery! Many photographers, myself included, prefer the winter palette of oranges and golds to the brighter colours of spring and summer.

We will be driving around in cars. Large vehicles (Minibusses etc) are not well suited to potentially snowy conditions! If you are not able to drive I will be collecting people from Inverness at the start and end of the trip.

This workshop is priced at £860 with a £360 deposit required to book your place. The remaining £500 is due 2 months before the workshop starts. There is a £60 supplement for single occupancy (first come first served, 3 double rooms are available).
