What to Expect

Come hiking in the mountains of Torridon and capture the spectacular views before retreating back to base to produce fine-art prints. We'll head up the mountains whenever the weather allows otherwise we will be exploring a multitude of low and mid-level locations in full autumn colour, many of which are not on the workshop circuit! we have a spacious base in Inveralligin at the foot of Beinn Alligin giving us excellent access to the area, whilst also providing communal areas for indoor teaching.

Itinerary

The trip will be adapted to suit the weather. The photos are all representative of what we might hope to photograph.  In the mornings we will have breakfast at the house, make a packed lunch and spend the day out in the landscape. If the weather is particularly conducive to our plans then we should be able to fit in a couple of mountains and a fair number of day hikes. Whilst the focus will be on visiting harder to reach and lesser known locations, there will be probably be some days where the weather keeps us closer to the cars. In bad weather we might go to Assynt for the day, or drive the Applecross Peninsula.

Tuition

There will be plenty of 1-to-1 time both on the hill and back at our accommodation. I'm equally comfortable teaching beginner or advanced photographers. Hopefully the printing aspect will add an extra dimension to the trip. I will be bringing my Canon Pro-1000 so you can all go home with some nice prints of your work. Below is a selection from the last time I did this!

Fitness and Experience

The Torridonian mountains generally include 900m ascents to reach the summits and we may have long days out in the hills, so you should be fit enough for that. We will take at least one day off between mountain days, and in general the weather will only allow one or two days up high!

Equipment

A kit list will be sent out in advance of the trip, but you should dress expecting wet and cold weather (see below from mid-October 2024!). It could be near zero and windy on the summits, so full waterproofs, hat, gloves and plenty of warm layers are necessary. You will need a headtorch in case we need to walk back in the dark (as will be the plan if we get a good mountain day). You must have walking boots or other suitable footwear if you are more experienced and know you can get away with trail shoes etc! Wellies and an umbrella may also be helpful.

Meeting and Leaving

We will meet at our cottage in Inveralligin at 6pm on Saturday 18th October . I can offer lifts from Inverness around 3pm for anyone not driving. The workshop concludes on Friday morning (I have to get back for my son's 2nd birthday the next day) however we have the accommodation for one more night and you will be welcome to stay free of charge.

Additional Expenses

The trip does not include food, drink or personal insurance. I will make dinner reservations for some nights and we will eat in on other nights.

Our Accomodation

We will be staying at Beinn View House a large self-catered property on the shore of Loch Torridon at Inveralligin. It is a short drive to Torridon Village and we have excellent access to the surrounding mountains. There is one King room, two doubles and two twins.

Price and Booking

This workshop is priced at £1500 for a Double room or King, single occupancy. If you wish to invite partner then you can share the King room for an additional £800 (priority for the King room will go to a couple).

Twin room single occupancy £1300

Twin room sharing with me £1100
