What to Expect

Come hiking in the mountains of Torridon in early autumn with an incredibly small group (max 4). We'll head up the mountains whenever the weather allows otherwise we will be exploring a multitude of low and mid-level locations that I have come across over the years, many of which are not on the workshop circuit! Our base in the heart of Torridon is incredibly comfortable and ideally situated at the base of Liathach.

Itinerary

The trip will be adapted to suit the weather. The photos are all highly representative of what we might hope to photograph.  In the mornings we will have breakfast at the house, make a packed lunch and spend the day out in the landscape. If the weather is particularly conducive to our plans then we should be able to fit in a couple of mountains and a fair number of day hikes. Whilst the focus will be on visiting harder to reach and lesser known locations, there will be probably be some days where the weather keeps us closer to the car.

Tuition

With a group of just 3 (max 4) there will be plenty of 1-to-1 time both on the hill and back at our accommodation. During the day we will be mostly focussed on our photography, although if the weather is bad we may spend a morning or afternoon indoors running through our images or discussing some finer aspects of landscape photography.

Fitness and Experience

The Torridonian mountains generally include 900m ascents to reach the summits and we may have long days out in the hills, so you should be fit enough for that. We will take at least one day off between mountain days, and in general the weather will only allow one or two days up high! That said I am hoping to push it a bit if the weather DOES allow, so if you have doubts about your ability to do two mountains in two days, then this trip might not be for you!

Equipment

A kit list will be sent out in advance of the trip, but you should dress expecting wet and cold weather. It could be near zero and windy on the summits, so full waterproofs, hat, gloves and plenty of warm layers are necessary. You will need a headtorch in case we need to walk back in the dark (as will be the plan if we get a good mountain day). You must have walking boots or other suitable footwear if you are more experienced and know you can get away with trail shoes etc! Wellies and an umbrella may also be helpful.

Meeting and Leaving

We will meet at our cottage in Torridon at 6pm on Saturday 12th October. I can offer lifts from Inverness around 3pm for anyone not driving. The workshop concludes after breakfast on Friday, however we have the accommodation for one more night and you will be welcome to stay free of charge.

Additional Expenses

The trip does not include food, drink or personal insurance. I will make dinner reservations for some nights and we will eat in on other nights.

Our Accomodation

We will be staying at a National Trust for Scotland property called Glen Cottage which is ideally situated in the heart of Torridon at the base of Liathach. The location really is quite incredible and gives us superb access to the mountains.

Price and Booking

This workshop is priced at £1600 for a Double room, single occupancy. If you wish to invite partner then you can share that room for an additional £850.

I will be staying in the twin room and if you want to share that room with me the price is £1200.
