Glyderau, Snowdonia

24 Apr 2020 - 26 Apr 2020  |  £200

What to Expect

During this two night adventure we will be camping high on the Glyder Ridge enjoying what I consider to be the best mountain landscape south of Scotland. This trip is aimed at those who want to try out wild camping, or just want to escape for a fun weekend in the mountains. Top-end tents, sleeping kit and stoves can be provided for £20 extra - you just need a backpack, camera gear and suitable clothing.

We will visit some incredible mountain locations including Castell Y Gwynt, Llyn Y Caseg Fraith, Glyder Fach, Glyder Fawr and Y Garn. I will be offering my guidance with respect to photography and outdoorsmanship. For those looking to join one of my longer workshops this is a good "tester" to find out what it is all about.

Itinerary

Friday: Meet at 11.30am and hike up to Lyn Y Caseg Fraith where we will make camp. From here we will continue up to the top of the Glyder Ridge staying at Castell Y Gwynt for sunset before returning to the tents. We will photography the tents and mountain views at twlight.

Saturday: We will wake up to a spectacular mountain view across Llyn y Caseg Fraith to Tryfan and the Glyders. If we are lucky with the light this will provide outstanding photographic opportunities. After packing up we will walk the Glyders passing Glyder Fach, Fawr and on to Y Garn. We'll set up camp in the vicinity and shoot sunset from up high.

Sunday: Sunrise shoot. Packup and head back to the cars finishing some time aroud 1-2pm/

Fitness and Experience

No mountain experience is necessary. If you are walking fit and healthy you should be able to complete this hike. The routes we are taking are entirely non-technical but there is some steep ground. You will need to carry an 18kg rucksack including your camera kit, food, and the camping gear you will be using.

Equipment

You should provide your own summer walking kit. Clothing should include baselayers, mid-layers, a down vest/jacket and full waterproofs (jacket and trousers). You must have sturdy waking boots, not walking shoes/trainers. I would recommend keeping camera kit simple – an SLR, a wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens and a tripod.

You can hire Rab Neutrino 400 sleeping bags and Neo Air Xtherm sleeping matts, stoves and 2-man Terra Nova Ultra Quasar tents, perfectly designed for high mountain use. The hire price for all the items is £15.  I will provide a complete kit list the major item to pick up is a 60-70L backpack.

Tuition

We will both be on hand at all times to help you with your images should you wish. With a small group size (maximum 5) there will be plenty of opportunity for 1-to-1 time with both of us. The level of independence and tuition is entirely flexible, depending on individual interests and needs.

Transport

You will have to make your own way to Snowdonia. We will meet near Tryfan on Friday at 11.30am.

Accommodation

If the weather is totally unsuitable for camping (windy or very wet) we may need to find alternative accommodation arrangements (not included). This may involve a hostel or bed and breakfast. If this is not possible we will find a lower camp site and complete the hikes regardless.

Payment

This workshop is priced at £200 (£20 extra for equipment hire). Full payment is required to book.
