Northwest Autumn Masterclass

30 Oct 2019 - 06 Nov 2019  |  £1200

What to Expect

In this accommodation based trip we will be exploring the NW Highlands of Scotland, driving to some locations in a 9-seater vehicle, but also doing walks of a few miles to get into the mountains and the spectacular landscapes they present. During the trip, weather permitting, we will walk to a few high viewpoints but also head out to some amazing low level spots. Each evening we return to comfortable self-catered accommodation and either cook a meal or head out for dinner. Through the process of shooting my book ‘NORTHWEST’ I have come to know this area of the highlands incredibly well and as a result I will be taking the group to a number of spots that are relatively unknown.

The workshop will be split between Assynt and Torridon, probably the two finest mountain areas in the UK. The trip is timed for the best of the Autumn colour. The birch trees turn fabulous golds and oranges, and the grasses also present a rainbow of colour. The unsettled weather at this time of year brings incredible drama to the peaks, but don’t worry there is a wet weather plan too!

This year I will be bringing a Canon Pro-1000 A2 printer with me along with Fotospeed paper at A3 and A2. During any down time or at night I can go through my straightforward approach to image editing, as well as teaching more advanced aspects to those that are interested. Optional critique sessions will ensure you get as much learning as possible from the workshop. We’ll also be printing our images and every client will go home with a few prints from the trip.

The itinerary below is based on suitable conditions, during particularly bad weather we'll do a mixture of heading out and running processing/printing sessions.

Wed 30th Oct - Pickup from Glasgow at 10am to drive to the Northwest going via Inverness around 1.30. Check in to accommodation in Ullapool and then drive for a low level sunset in Assynt.

Thur 31st Oct – Photographing Suilven, we will spend the day outside photographing this enigmatic peak from different angles. We will also shoot Quinag to the north.

Fri 1st Nov – Photographing Stac Pollaidh. If weather allows we will ascend the mountain at a slow pace (probably the easiest mountain in Britain). We will also try to visit at least 3 low level locations making this a very full day!

Sat 2nd Nov – Photographing Cul Mor. We’ll visit a couple of spots that give fantastic views of this unusual mountain. In the evening we drive to Torridon and check in to our accommodation.

Sun 3rd Nov - Beinn Eighe, Loch Maree and Slioch. We will hike a well pathed route up towards views of Beinn Eighe. There will also be time to photograph the Scots pine. We will also spend time some time exploring the shores of Loch Maree and photographing Slioch on the opposite side of the water.

Mon 4th Nov – Coulin Hills. This day will be focussed on capturing the peaks to the south of Torridon village. There are a few viewpoints we can visit but we will also take a walk into the hills themselves where we will be surrounded by peaks.

Tue 5th Nov – Beinn Alligin. After a low level sunrise shoot we will spend the day out and about around the foot of Beinn Alligin. There are a couple of exciting spots to share!

Wed 6th Nov – Low level sunrise and then depart back to Inverness and Glasgow.

I will be on hand at all times to help you with your images should you wish. With a small group size (maximum 5) there will be plenty of opportunity for 1-to-1 time. The level of independence and tuition is entirely flexible, depending on individual interests and needs. You certainly won’t be marshalled around. In particular if you would like to work on your composition I will be on hand with my ciritcal eye to provide feedback!

This trip is targeted at normal people. You need to be able to walk up to 6 miles in a day over undulating or gently rising ground but I want to emphasise that this is much easier than my other trips! None of the walks involve exposure. We will be doing some easy walking off path.

You need to be suitably equipped for the outdoors. Waterproofs and sturdy walking boots are both required as well as warm clothing for standing around waiting for the light. A headtorch is also necessary in case we plan to walk out before sunrise or after sunset. I will be taking a large pack with me so we can have hot drinks and a few luxuries when we are out all day. A more complete list will be sent out closer to the time.

The trip does not include flights, insurance, food and drink.

This workshop is priced at £1160 with a £400 deposit to reserve your place. There is a £100 single room supplement. Please read the Terms and Conditions before booking.
