Iceland - Laugavegur Trail

04 Aug 2018 - 10 Aug 2018  |  £820

What to Expect

Spend 6 days hiking the iconic Laugavegur Trail shooting landscapes that few other photographers will witness. The Laugavegur is a spectacular hiking route through the Southern Highlands of Iceland. Each day of this adventure workshop presents a distinct and different landscape. Having walked the Laugavegur on five separate occasions I have an expert knowledge of the area - the photographic opportunities are outstanding.

There are many photography tours going to Iceland, but this trip is different, we are going where no other workshops go! This tour offers a guided adventure experience. You will be led to camping locations off the trail where there is a overriding feeling of remoteness. On other days wilderness campsites provide hot showers and refresh! We will walk across snowfields, volcanic deserts and ford glacially fed rivers. This is a real outdoor experience!

Itinerary

Saturday - 9.30am meet and greet at the Reykjavik campsite. I will dispense equipment and explain its use. At noon we will catch a bus to Landmannalaugar. We will arrive in the evening, set up the tents and go on a short sunset hike. Hopefully we will also find time to enjoy the natural hot pool here.

Sunday to Thursday - Hike the Laugavegur. We will hike the 4 day route over 5 days taking all the best the trail has to offer as well as camping in one totally wild location (weather permitting). The first part of the hike takes us over the high rhyolite plateau over snowfields, a mountain made of glass(!) and on to a majestic overlook of the volcanic landscape below.  We  will then head down to the idyllic lake of Alftavatn, across volcanic plains with magical moss covered mountains to Emstrur, and finally on to the wooded glade of Thorsmork.

Altavatn in Iceland

Friday - On Friday morning we will take the morning bus back from Thorsmork to Reykjavik arriving in the afternoon. Workshop concludes - please make your own arrangements for accomodation from this point on.

Saturday - Flights home.

Tuition

I will be on hand at all times to help you with your images should you wish. With a small group size (maximum 5) there will be plenty of opportunity for 1-to-1 time. We'll cover technique, lighting and composition making sure you come away with incredible shots. The level of independence and tuition is entirely flexible, depending on individual interests and needs.

Fitness And Experience

You do not need prior wilderness camping experience to join this workshop. You will be provided with all the advice you need prior to the start date. This trail can be completed by anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. The fitter you are, the easier the route will be, but you don't need to be a professional athlete to come along! Each day we will be walking with our backpacks up to 12km on excellent ground. Whilst there are a few climbs and descents the route is predominantly undulating or fairly flat. We'll be taking a steady pace to make sure we can have a good time hiking as a group.

Equipment & Food

I can provide the very best lightweight camping equipment perfectly suited for the trail for an additional fee of £50 for the week. This includes Terra Nova Ultra Quasar tents (sharing), Rab Neutrino 400 sleeping bags, NeoAir Xtherm sleeping mats and MSR Windboiler stoves. If however you would prefer to use your own sleeping kit, or bring your own mountain tent then you are welcome to. I will be sending out a detailed guide and equipment list once the trip is booked.

Additional Expenses

The trip does not include flights, accomodation in Reykjavik or the bus transport from the airport to Reykjavik campsite (around £30 return Flybus+ ticket will take you to and from the Laugadalur campsite). You will also require travel insurance.

Price And Booking

This workshop is priced at £820 with a £300 deposit required to book your place. The remaining £520 is due 2 months before departure.

NB an additional £50 is required if you wish to hire my equipment (as above)
