Lake District Wild Camping

26 Apr 2019 - 28 Apr 2019  |  £230

What to Expect

For this trip I'm teaming up with Guy Richardson, a regular hiking partner and talented photographer, to offer a long weekend adventure in the Lake District. We're heading out at the end of April before the crowds sky rocket to visit some of the finest scenery in the area. This is a great way to dust off the winter cobwebs and get out into some exciting places with your camera. We'll be on hand throughout to teach photography and outdoorsmanship (I am a qualified Mountain Leader). There's a tiny group size for 2 leaders (just 6, a 3:1 ratio) so you'll have plenty of time to pick our brains and we can help you with the particulars of technique and composition.

You can check out Guy's spectacular portfolio of the Lakes here: Lake District Portfolio.

This workshop is fully booked.

Day 1 - Keswick - Sprinkling Tarn

We will meet early afternoon in Keswick and after a short drive we'll begin our hike to Sprinkling Tarn. Once we arrive we'll set up the tents and have dinner before photographing the sunset. Depending on the conditions, we'll also attempt some night photography.

Day 2 - Great End and Bow Fell

The biggest advantage of wild camping is being in the prime spot for sunrise, depending on conditions we're in a prime location for some great vantage points. After a breakfast at the camp, we'll pack up on to our next spot, stopping on the way to photograph the landscape. We'll set up camp near Bow Fell before going out to shoot sunset.

Day 3 - Sunrise and walk out

After sunrise from one of the Lake District's most impressive fells we'll start our hike back to the cars to conclude the workshop some time around lunchtime.

No mountain experience is necessary. If you are walking fit and healthy you should be able to complete this hike. The routes we are taking are entirely non-technical but there is some steep ground. You will need to carry an 18kg rucksack including your camera kit, food, water and the camping gear you will be using.

You should provide your own spring walking kit. Clothing should include baselayers, mid-layers, a down jacket and full waterproofs (jacket and trousers). You must have sturdy waking boots, not walking shoes/trainers. I would recommend keeping camera kit simple – an SLR, a wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens and a tripod.

You can hire Rab Neutrino 400 sleeping bags and Neo Air Xtherm sleeping matts, stoves and (shared) 2-man Terra Nova Quasar tents, perfectly designed for high mountain use. The hire price for all the items is £30.  I will provide a complete kit list but the major item to pick up is a 60-70L backpack.

We will both be on hand at all times to help you with your images should you wish. With a small group size (maximum 6, 3:1 ratio) there will be plenty of opportunity for 1-to-1 time with both of us. The level of independence and tuition is entirely flexible, depending on individual interests and needs.

Aside from photography this trip is a great opportunity to learn the planning and outdoors skills to conduct your own outdoor adventures!

We'll be meeting in Keswick at 2pm. Keswick is easily accessible by road or public transport. If you have any questions about travel arrangements please let one of us know.

We'll be staying in mountain tents for the duration. If the forecast is spectacularly bad we will cancel, but if its just windy or a bit wet we'll just adjust our plan - it will be fun!

This workshop is priced at £230 for the long weekend, £30 kit hire. The deposit is £100 with the remaining £130 due a month before the workshop starts.
