Fisherfield Autumn Summits

17 Oct 2021 - 23 Oct 2021  |  £1150

What to Expect

This is a trip for photographers looking for an adventure in the Highlands right as the mountains come into autumn colour. Weather at this time of year can be very unsettled so the trip includes simple self-catered accomodation for every night, but if the weather allows we will be camping high in the mountains in search of magical autumn vistas in the little recognised, but majestic, area of Fisherfield. There will be just 4 clients so there should be plenty of time for 1-to-1 help and advice. I can also provide transport from Inverness for up to two people.

Last year I spent two weeks in Fisherfield and I only managed one night in a tent. It did however reveal a number of excellent locations that work well in rainy or overcast conditions and with Torridon not too far away we have plenty to choose from. So even if the weather isn't ideal we'll get out on some decent walks and visit locations that other photography workshops simply don't visit.

We will meet on Sunday 17th October to check into our self-catered accomodation, which is small but should be a perfectly good base for the trip! There is no formal plan on this first evening. We will depart after sunrise on Saturday 23rd October OR before noon if we are camping on the final night.

Our days are likely to be highly variable based on the weather conditions. When sunrise/sunset doesnt look particularly promising, or the weather is bad, we will tend to plan trips from our accomodation. This may involve walks where we are out all day and only return in the evening, sometimes in the dark. We should be able to visit some birch tree coppices in the peak of autumn colour (depending on the timing of autumn!) and even tackle some summits if we only have a short weather window or it is too windy to camp.

If the weather is good we will go backpacking and may summit camp or mid-level camp on consecutive nights. We will make it our goal to camp one night on An Teallach to be on location for sunset and sunrise. Sunrise is particularly good on this Bidean a'Ghlas Thuill (An Teallach) from October through to Feburary because first light finds its way into the corrie and onto Sgurr Fiona and the Corrag Bhuide Pinnacles (see the winter scene below!). Other Fisherfield summits worth considering are Beinn Airigh Charr and Slioch. There are also a number of potential mid level camp spots I would like to take the group to.

I will be on hand at all times to help you with your images should you wish. With a small group size (maximum 4) there will be plenty of opportunity for 1-to-1 time. The level of independence and tuition is entirely flexible, depending on individual interests and needs. In particular if you would like to work on your composition I will be on hand with my ciritcal eye to provide feedback!

Whilst many of our days may involve light packs and shorter walks the ultimate intent is to go backpacking in the mountains and you should only book if you are moderately fit. For anyone who regularly excercises this shouldn't be a problem, but a backpack with camping kit and camera kit may weigh as much as 20kg and does make mountain ascents much harder. That said you don't require any prior camping experience as long as you can do the walking!

A complete PDF kitlist is provided upon booking so you can be confident you have everything you need. I can provide high-end lightweight camping equipment perfectly suited for the trip. This includes Terra Nova Quasar tents, Rab Neutrino 400 sleeping bags and NeoAir Xtherm sleeping mats. If however you would prefer to use your own sleeping kit, or bring your own tent then you are welcome to. Aside from camping equipment which is provided, you will need suitable outdoor clothing, walking boots a rucksack and a number of other items.

Obviously tents will be single occupancy due to coronavirus restrictions. I have one lightweight 1-man tent to loan out otherwise you will either have to carry one of my two man mountain tents (3.5kg) or provide your own lightweight tent.

Since this is an Autumn trip there is the potential for early cold weather (temperatures close to freezing) and as such it is important that you have very effective waterproofs and the necessary warm clothing.

The trip does not include flights, insurance, food and drink. It does include transport from Inverness for the first two clients to request it.

Cancellations due to Coronavirus

This trip has been planned within the anticipated restrictions post June 23rd 2020 with the anticipated total relaxation of rules over the summer. Obviously there are many ways in which the restrictions could change. In the event that the workshop cannot take place you will be refunded in full. If however you are forced to cancel for covid reasons that do not affect the group as a whole (ie local lockdown) then I will not be able to refund your deposit.

This workshop is priced variably depending on the room you take in our modest self-catered accomodation. There is a King (£1200), Double Room (£1200), Single Room (£1100) and Twin with two single beds (£900, shared with me, I dont snore!). A £400 deposit is required to book your place.
