This is a great way to develop your photographic skills on your own terms, whether that means a relaxed approach visiting easily accessible locations or a wilderness adventure!
I am happy to travel anywhere in the UK but I have a specialist photographic knowledge of Northwest Scotland, Glencoe, Dartmoor and Snowdonia. If you would like to do a trip in an area that I haven’t visited before then I am happy to explore with you and apply the same principles that I would in any area that I visit.
If you are based in the south west then Dartmoor is very accessible with beautiful landscapes
Since this is a 1-to-1 the teaching aspect is to a large degree down to you. Usually I would start by ensuring you are technically able, starting with the fundamentals and then practicing a few more technical aspects like hyperfocal focussing. From there we work on lighting and composition, discuss image concepts, and then try to employ what we have learnt in a variety of scenarios. The beauty of a custom trip is you can decide upon the physical difficulty! Most of my first 1-to-1s in the mountains came about because the client didn’t fancy backpacking! I’ve done plenty of trips by the roadside retiring to comfortable accommodation.
The clothing and gear we need will be highly dependent on the season and location. Most of my 1-to-1s have been accommodation based, but occasionally people want to go on a camping adventure and in that case I am able to provide most of the equipment you need if you do not already have it yourself.
As far as camera equipment goes, I would suggest an SLR or Mirrorless, lenses which cover about 24-200mm (although 16-300 is obviously better!), a polariser and a tripod. That should cover you for almost every shooting scenario we encounter regardless of the location.
If you want to club together with another photographers then please add £100 per day. Custom workshops for larger groups can be organised at competitive rates and I can also travel internationally. Non-photographic guests are free.
